Blue is a rare color in flowers, but that heavenly hue is fully attainable for your garden with a bed of Blue Squill (Scilla siberica). An early season bloomer, the Blue Squill is “an excellent bulb for naturalizing, because it multiplies well year after year,” according to Martha Stewart, who grows them on her farm in Bedford, New York. In fact, it may take these striking stems a few years to fully hit their stride, but you’ll be treated to yearly shows of ethereal blues while they self sow and work hard to spread. The 100 Colorblends bulbs, cultivated in the Netherlands, should be planted in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Martha suggests planting them “three inches deep and three inches apart.” The flowers will grow 5-7 inches tall and are deer resistant (but rodents such as voles and gophers may eat the bulbs.)
